What is an All-on-4 dental implant?

The All-on-4™ technique secures a brand new full mouth of teeth using four dental implants to provide a fixed, permanent solution to complex dental problems.

The All-on-4™ technique involves strategically placing four dental implants in the affected arch. By placing two implants at the front and two implants in the back, at a slight angle, there is enough structural support to place a full and fixed set of prosthetic teeth. In the past, such an extensive implant procedure would have taken many more implants and with a much longer healing time. Therefore, the All-On-4™ technique is an incredible and often life-altering solution for those with severe tooth loss.

The All-on-4™ solution may be the answer if you:

  • Want to avoid removable dentures
  • Are suffering from ill-fitting dentures
  • Have failing natural teeth due to decay and infections
  • Have advanced gum disease are missing teeth/tooth loss
  • Have loose teeth

All-on-4 vs Dentures

Dentures have been used for hundreds of years to fill the spaces left by missing teeth. However, solving the problem of lost teeth using dentures tends to bring a whole new list of problems. Lack of suction, soreness, movement, facial collapse, dropping, bone loss and gagging – in fact in many cases denture wearers actually prefer go back to wearing nothing at all!

With the discovery of dental implants and a further 50 years of research, we have a proven solution. Dental implants not only replace the missing teeth cosmetically but bring strength, functionality, and longevity.

Dental implants are now considered to be the best alternative to natural teeth, restoring almost 100% of function and have the same look and feel of natural teeth.

In cases where all of the natural teeth have been lost or are about to be lost, we can now use a minimal number of implants to restore an entire set of teeth.

The All-on-4™ dental implant treatment replaces an entire arch of teeth, using only 4 dental implants. The All-on-4™ technology has now been around for over 15 years and has proven to be the least invasive way to replace a full set of teeth.

The All-On-4™ implants are fixed permanently in place, they replace lost teeth and gum and don’t cover the palate – so they feel and act just like a full set of natural teeth.

The four implants anchor the All-on-4™ bridge into position and actually stimulate the bone and promote bone formation in those areas. This prevents the continuing bone loss and facial collapse associated with traditional dentures.

For suitable candidates All-on-4™ technology will restore full function, facial height, correct bite and jaw position, improve speech, and reestablish facial aesthetics all within 4 days.

Because All-on-4™ treatment involves surgery, it’s always carried out under deep IV Sedation or General Anaesthetic by our specialist anaesthetic team.

It should be noted that the procedure relies on enough good quality bone to be successful. A 3D bone scan is required for anyone considering any dental implant treatment. This is necessary because in some cases additional dental implants, aside from the standard 4, may be required. There is no run of the mill All-on-4 solution; each treatment has to be tailor-designed for every individual case to ensure success.

What is the All-on-4 process?

Treatment Visits

Treatment can be completed within 2 – 4 weeks of the initial visit.

1. Complimentary visit to discuss treatment options and cost.

2. Digital “cloning” of client – photos, video, impressions, 3D imaging of teeth and bone, digital smile design and discussion with a technician is done to ensure the best possible results. Cosmetics and bite are designed.

3. Treatment Day (while asleep) – Sedation/Sleep treatment, terminal teeth removed, placement of implants, the impression of the implant, smile and bite indexing.

4. Trial Smile – Final teeth are tested to check the smile and bite. The patient completes refinement of the smile and via digital smile analysis and the team. Final adjustments are completed overnight.

FINISH – Final bridge is inserted with little or no adjustments.

Variations of All-on-4

Throughout dentistry there are many different adaptations of All-On-4™. These variations are practiced by different dentists throughout the world but the concept remains the same, placing a new bridge onto fixed dental implants to replace an arch of teeth.

Some variations you may have heard of include; teeth in a day, teeth in an hour and Golpa G4. Here at ADAP Dr Adrian and West Perth team have their own refined system which includes trail smiles and additional fitting tests. This we believe gives us a much better finished result as opposed to rushing the final bridge. Where some providers will give a final bridge instantly, our process comprehensively refines your new smile analysing not just the cosmetics, but function, bite and speech.

Express cosmetics – teeth in 2-3 days!

Sometimes patients think the process of getting a new smile is a long and disruptive process especially when on a busy schedule. Whether it is work or the kids, finally saying ‘yes’ to a new smile might not actually take as long as you think!

We all know the modern world is lived at a very fast pace, and for some people finding the ‘right moment’ to say yes to treatment never seems to come around. Did you know that from the day of all-on-4 surgery your new smile can be fitted in as little as 2-3 days?! It is sometimes difficult for patients to get time off work, especially FIFO workers with variable rosters. Not to mention our patients who travel interstate, from rural WA and overseas. Accommodating these types of cases is something the team are used to doing, without most importantly compromising on quality.

What can go wrong with all-on-4?

Make no mistakes about it, all-on-4 surgery is a highly complex procedure and a decision to go ahead with treatment should not be taken lightly.

With surgery there are always risks, and for some people getting a new smile can turn into a nasty experience meaning they don’t get the results they want. When looking at any medical field it is important to understand that different practitioners have different specialities. Dr Adrian was one of the first dentists to bring the all-on-4 concept to Perth, and has been performing implant surgery for almost 20 years. Not to mention the experience and our onsite ceramists and prosthetists who have almost 70 years between them! No matter what your concerns, the team will have treated patients just like you before and they will be able to show you exactly the sort of results you can expect.

All-on-4 in Australia vs all-on-4 overseas

Did you know that over 15,000 Aussies go overseas for either dental or cosmetic surgery each year, so why are so many people opting for these ‘surgery holidays’?

Asia, especially Thailand and Malaysia, seem to be the destination of choice for many, but what people fail to understand is that the legislations, quality of training, experience, equipment, and overall regulations are generally not to the standards accepted in Australia. The repercussions of failed treatment is something we see all too often here at ADAP.
