Why is cleaning All-on-4 dental implants important?
Although the implants themselves do not decay, the surrounding gums and bone can be affected by plaque and bacteria. If left unaddressed, this can lead to inflammation and infection, including peri-implantitis—a condition similar to gum disease that can weaken the bone and compromise the stability of the implants.
Without proper care, plaque can also lead to bad breath, gum irritation, and discolouration of the bridge. Regular cleaning helps maintain both oral health and the appearance of your smile.
Protecting your investment
All-on-4 dental implants are a long-term commitment to your oral health, function, and overall well-being. To ensure they remain in optimal condition, it’s important to follow a comprehensive maintenance routine, including at-home care and professional check-ups.
How to clean your All-on-4 bridge
Our dentists have put together some easy ways to help you keep your All-on-4 implants clean at home.
For the video version of this information, watch here.
Using a soft manual toothbrush
- Apply a pea-sized amount of the recommended toothpaste to a soft-bristled toothbrush.
- Hold the toothbrush with a pen grip for better control.
- Gently brush along the teeth and gum line in a circular motion to distribute the toothpaste and remove large food particles.
Using an implant ortho brush
- This long, thin brush is designed to clean the outside-facing surfaces along the gum line where the bridge meets the gums.
- To access this area, bite down gently so your lips and cheeks are relaxed.
- Move the brush in a gentle circular motion along the gum line to clean and massage the area.
Using a universal care brush
- This brush is designed to clean the inside arch of both the upper and lower bridges.
- Position the bristles along the gum line and brush in a gentle circular motion to remove plaque and debris.
Using a compact tuft brush
The compact tuft brush is ideal for cleaning tight areas, such as:
- Between the teeth
- Around the implants
- Behind the bridge
This brush can be used wherever additional cleaning is needed.
Using X-Floss
- X-Floss comes in different sizes (blue and green). Your dental practitioner will recommend the best one for you.
- Bend the tip slightly before inserting for easier use.
How to floss effectively:
- Bite down gently to relax your cheeks.
- Insert the floss all the way through until the fluffy part reaches the gum line.
- Adapt the floss to form a U-shape around the bridge:
- Bottom teeth: U-shape points upwards.
- Top teeth: U-shape points downwards.
- Move the floss back and forth slowly to remove debris.
- When you reach the implant, adapt the floss into a C-shape and move it up and down gently along its length.
- Repeat the process on the opposite side of the implant.
Tip: If flossing from the front is difficult, try inserting it from the inside of the bridge, where the hard palate provides more stability.
Once flossing is complete, hook the floss behind the bridge and continue with the C- and U-shape adaptation.
Using Pikster brushes
- Pikster brushes come in various sizes and colours—your dental practitioner will recommend the right one for you.
- Attach the cap to the back of the handle for better grip.
- Bend the brush 90 degrees for easier access.
- Bite down gently to relax your lips and cheeks.
- Insert the brush carefully against the implant and bridge.
- Move it in and out slowly until it reaches the other side.
- If the brush feels too tight, do not force it—move to the next accessible area instead.
Using a water flosser
- Attach the classic jet tip to your water flosser.
- Fill the water tank with lukewarm water.
- Turn on the machine and adjust the water pressure (start at level 1-4 and gradually increase as needed).
- Position the tip close to the gum line, where the bridge and gums meet.
- Move the flosser in a back-and-forth, in-and-out, and circular motion to flush away food and debris.
Signs that your All-on-4 implants may need attention
Even with careful maintenance, there may be times when your All-on-4 implants need additional attention. If you notice any of the following signs, it’s essential to schedule an appointment with your dentist:
- Bleeding gums: Persistent bleeding around the implants may be an early sign of gum disease and should be checked by a professional.
- Swelling or discomfort: Swelling, pain, or tenderness around the implants could indicate an infection or other issue.
- Bad breath: Persistent bad breath or an unpleasant taste in your mouth may be a sign of plaque build-up or infection.
Addressing these issues early can help prevent more severe problems and protect your All-on-4 implants for the long term.
Regular professional maintenance for All-on-4 implants
While at-home care is essential, regular dental check-ups and professional cleanings play a crucial role in maintaining the longevity of your implants.
What to expect during a professional cleaning
Your dentist or hygienist will use specialised tools and techniques to clean around your implants without causing damage. This may include:
- Ultrasonic scalers – Using gentle vibrations to break up hardened plaque (calculus) beneath the gum line.
- Polishing techniques – To remove surface stains and keep the bridge looking fresh.
Professional cleanings are generally recommended twice a year, though your dentist may suggest more frequent visits based on your individual oral health needs.
Tips for maintaining healthy gums with All-on-4 implants
Keeping your gums healthy is just as important as cleaning the implants themselves. Here are some additional ways to support gum health:
Stay hydrated
Drinking plenty of water throughout the day helps wash away food particles and bacteria, reducing plaque build-up. If you experience dry mouth, consider using sugar-free gum or a hydrating mouth spray to stimulate saliva production.
Maintain a balanced diet
A nutrient-rich diet supports gum and bone health. Key nutrients include:
- Vitamin C – Helps maintain healthy gum tissue.
- Calcium – Supports bone density and overall oral health.
Limiting sugary foods and drinks can also help prevent plaque accumulation.
Avoid tobacco products or vapes
Smoking and vaping increase the risk of gum disease and implant complications. Avoiding tobacco can support long-term gum health and contribute to the longevity of your implants.
