I LOOK ‘GUMMY’ WHEN I SMILE

ARE YOU NOTICING YOUR GUMMY SMILE?

Many patients come to see us because they feel they have a ‘gummy’ smile, something they usually notice in photographs, resulting in them hiding their smile or avoiding smiling all together!

Treatment Options

A smile can appear gummy for different reasons. It may be that there is excess gum, or that the upper lip lifts a lot when they smile. It can even simply come down to the size and shape of the teeth.

Every dental case is different, and we will need to see you for a personalised consultation to discuss your options and plan your case. However, some of the options include the following:

1

Gum Recontouring

In some cases, there is simply too much gum, so gum re-contouring or ‘gum-lifts’ is a great option to reduce gummy smiles. This procedure uses a laser to remove excess gum and can also adjust the shape of the gum that frames the tooth.

2

Gum Lift with Porcelain Veneers

Sometimes gummy smiles can be a combination of two problems; you may need to decrease gum and increase tooth size. This can be achieved by this gum lift with porcelain veneers combination treatment.

3

Anti-wrinkle Treatment

Gummy smiles can sometimes be the result of a ‘hypermobile’ upper lip, which retracts too far when you smile. In some cases, this can be controlled with anti-wrinkle injections (not provided in house).

Or it might be a combination of all of the above!

Key Details

How long does treatment normally take?

  • Gum recontouring – up to 2 weeks.
  • Gum lift with porcelain veneers – 4-6 weeks.
  • Anti-wrinkle treatment – (not available in house).

How long does treatment last?

  • Gum recontouring – up to 10 years.
  • Gum lift with porcelain veneers – 10-20+ years.
  • Anti-wrinkle treatment – will require regular maintenance.

How do I maintain the desired outcome?

  • Wear your nightguard to protect the teeth from night-time clenching and grinding.
  • Attend regular hygiene visits (every 6 months).
  • Avoid smoking and/or vaping.

Does it hurt?

  • The reality is many dental procedures cause discomfort of differing levels depending on the type and severity of the procedure. Our priority is to ensure you are as comfortable as possible throughout all procedures. We also offer the option of sedation if you would prefer to sleep during treatment due to nerves or lengthy appointments.

What is the expected recovery time?

  • Gum recontouring – 1-2 weeks.
  • Gum lift with porcelain veneers – 1-2 weeks.
  • Anti-wrinkle treatment – depends on the provider.
  • You may experience a little sensitivity and tenderness after your preparation and insert appointments, but should be able to go about your day as usual. We can recommend adequate pain relief so you are comfortable during and after these appointments.
  • If you have chosen to sedate for your appointment, you will take some pre-sedation medication the night before, but unfortunately this means you cannot drive to and from your appointment, and potentially the next day. We also advise taking your treatment day and the next day off work as you may be still be under the effects of the medication. We can supply a medical certificate for the time required in order to recover.

What are the key risks?

  • Risks of complications following gum recontouring can include slow healing and gum recession.
  • Veneers require a small amount of enamel removal from the tooth surface for placement. This alteration is irreversible.
  • Porcelain veneers are durable, but they are not indestructible. There is a risk of chipping or breakage, particularly if the veneers are subjected to excessive force or pressure. This is why it is critical to wear a nightguard to prevent wear and tear.
  • Ongoing maintenance is needed to maintain the desired treatment outcome, and patients must factor in the time and costs required in the future.
