I HAVE GAPS

How Do I Fix My Gappy Smile?

Whether you have multiple or a single gap between your teeth, closing these spaces can change the aesthetics of your smile. Gapped teeth can also be an oral health risk, as trapped food can cause decay and gum issues.

Treatment Options

Your recommended pathway will be dictated by your dental condition and your smile goals. For a more personal idea, we encourage a consultation with our team at Advanced Dental Artistry, where our unique approach to treatment planning will outline your possible options.

Generally, to address gappy teeth, you have two main options available to you.

1

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain Veneers are ultra-thin, custom-made porcelain laminates that are bonded directly to the teeth. Veneers will allow us to close spaces, transform the size, shape, colour and position of your teeth.

When using veneers to close gaps, attention to detail during the design process is essential, to prevent the teeth from appearing overly large. Our in-depth design process takes this into consideration, for a beautiful, proportionate smile.

2

Orthodontics/Invisalign

These clear (almost invisible) aligners will move your natural teeth into the correct position and bite. They are entirely removable and have a similar completion time to traditional fixed braces. Invisalign uses computer technology to create your custom made aligners, each with a minor adjustment to the last. By wearing the aligner trays, your teeth are exposed to a gradual force which moves them into the ideal position.

If you are happy with the size, shape and physical appearance of your teeth, then this is an ideal option.

Please note: Advanced Dental Artistry does not provide this service, but can refer you to a trusted provider if you want this treatment in combination with treatment completed at our clinic.

Porcelain Veneers

Key Details

How long does treatment normally take?

  • Porcelain Veneers – 6-8 weeks.
  • Orthodontics/Invisalign (referred to a trusted provider) – Individual cases may vary, average time is 12-18 months.

How long does treatment last?

  • Porcelain Veneers – 10 to 20+ years, when combined with aftercare.
  • Orthodontics/Invisalign – Lifetime retainer.

How do I maintain the desired outcome?

  • Wear your nightguard to protect the teeth from night-time clenching and grinding.
  • Attend regular hygiene visits (every 6 months).
  • Avoid smoking and/or vaping.

Does it hurt?

  • The reality is many dental procedures cause discomfort of differing levels depending on the type and severity of the procedure. Our priority is to ensure that you are as comfortable as possible throughout all procedures. We also offer the option of sedation if you would prefer to sleep during treatment due to nerves or lengthy appointments.

What is the expected recovery time?

  • You may experience a little sensitivity and tenderness after your preparation and insert appointments, but should be able to go about your day as usual. We can recommend adequate pain relief so you are comfortable during and after these appointments.
  • If you have chosen to sedate for your appointment, you will take some pre-sedation medication the night before, but unfortunately this means you cannot drive to and from your appointment, and potentially the next day. We also advise taking your treatment day and the next day off work as you may be still be under the effects of the medication. We can supply a medical certificate for the time required in order to recover.

What are the key risks?

  • Veneers require a small amount of enamel removal from the tooth surface for placement. This alteration is irreversible.
  • Porcelain veneers are durable, but they are not indestructible. There is a risk of chipping or breakage, particularly if the veneers are subjected to excessive force or pressure. This is why it is critical to wear a nightguard to prevent wear and tear.
  • Ongoing maintenance is needed to maintain the desired treatment outcome, and patients must factor in the time and costs required in the future.
